Fis family of transcription factors includes numerous characterized activators/repressors of diverse biological processes. Founding member of the family, Fis (?factor for inversion stimulation? [12588863, 19332822]), functions as a global nucleoid-associated regulator that controls a number of growth-related genes in E. coli [12588863]. Fis-family regulators share a conserved N-terminal HTH DNA binding domain (PF02954). Many regulators of nitrogen metabolism in the Fis family including NtrC, NorR, BkdR, RocR, and AcoR possess diverse multidomain structure including an N-terminal signal sensing/receiving domain (PF00989, PF01590, or 7103015), the central sigma-54 interacting domain (PF00158), and the C-terminal Fis-type HTH domain (PF02954).
