LexA protein belongs to the LexA family and acts mostly as a repressor; in some cases LexA can also activate transcription. LexA regulation was experimentally analyzed in different species from the Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi phyla. Under the condition of DNA damage, the LexA repressor dissociates from its DNA target sites and the LexA regulon is induced. The dissociation is caused by self-cleavage of LexA protein as a result interaction with the RecA-ssDNA-ATP complex. The SOS response regulon LexA includes a large set of genes involved in DNA reparation.
