Crp family of transcriptional regulators includes numerous characterized activators/repressors of diverse biological processes. The Crp subfamily of regulators in bacteria senses the cellular concentration of cyclic AMP (cAMP), a second messenger important in many biological processes. In E.coli and other enterobacteria, the cAMP-Crp complex acts as a catabolite activator protein that activates the expression of genes involved in the utilization of alternative carbon sources in response to glucose starvation [16547048]. In several other groups of bacteria (Shewanella, Xanthomonas, Pseudomonas), Crp is not required for catabolite repression but controls anaerobic respiration, amino acid metabolism, virulence and pathogenicity [22081386, 21345179, 12775705]. more
