Transcription factors Zur belong to the Fur protein family and negatively controls genes involved in the homeostasis of zinc both in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The Zur regulons in the particular taxonomic groups were reconstructed by application of the comparative genomic approach to the sets of known Zur targets in the model species (such as E. coli, and B. subtilis). In other taxonomic groups the Zur regulons were reconstructed de novo for the sets of genes involved in zinc uptake [12904577]. The content of the reconstructed Zur regulons in various taxonomic groups varies significantly [19822009, 20055984].

Various zinc uptake transporters are regulated by Zur in almost all cases in Zur-encoding species. In addition, repression by Zur was predicted and then experimentally validated for genes encoding paralogs of L36, L33, L31 and S14 ribosomal proteins [12904577].
