Transcription factor NtrC is a member of the two-component NtrB-NtrC system that controls nitrogen assimilation in Proteobacteria. The NtrC regulator was experimentally analyzed in E. coli and some Alphaproteobacteria. NtrC usually acts as a transcriptional repressor but sometimes can act also as an activator of transcription. The NtrC protein contains a C-terminal HTH domain of the Fis family. NtrB functions as a membrane-associated protein kinase that in response to limitation of nitrogen and carbon-limited growth is autophosphorylated. After that, NtrB transfers its phosphate group to NtrC to activate this transcriptional regulator
