LuxR family comprises widespread and functionally diverse transcription factors that could act both as activators and repressors. LuxR-family regulators control diverse biological processes such as virulence, biofilm formation, quorum sensing, nitrogen oxide respiration, motility, bioluminescence, spore formation and stress responses [21751236, 19447950]. Based on the regulatory mechanism, LuxR-family regulators can be divided into two major groups: (i) regulators that belong to a two-component signal transduction system that are activated upon phosphorylation [7855431]; (ii) regulators that are activated via binding to an autoinducer-like N-acyl-homoserine lactones [20624221]; additionally, there are some LuxR-type regulators that do not belong to these two subfamilies (e.g. regulators that are activated upon ligand binding and autonomous effector domain LuxR-type regulators) [19447950].

Two-component regulators from the LuxR family share a C-terminal DNA binding domain (PF00196) and an N-terminal receiver domain (PF00072) that is common for all response regulators.
