Transcription factor HutC from the GntR protein family regulates the histidine utilization genes in Proteobacteria. It was originally characterized in Klebsiella aerogenes and Pseudomonas putida as a repressor of the hut catabolic genes. cis-Urocanic acid, the first intermediate of the hut pathway, is an inducer that interacts with HutC, causing a conformational change that dissociates the repressor from the promoter sequences. After dissociation, transcription of the hut genes is derepressed.
