Transcription factor NsrR from the Rrf2 protein family regulates genes involved in cell protection against nitric oxide (NO) in Proteobacteria and Bacillales. It was originally characterized in beta-proteobacterium Nitrosomonas europeae, where it regulates expression of the copper-nitrite reductase nirK in response to nitrite. Later NsrR was characterized in Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, wher it controls various NO detoxifixation genes. For DNA binding, NsrR has a helix-turn-helix motif close to the N terminus and three cysteine residues to ligate a 2Fe-2S cluster close to the C terminus. more
