Transcription factor MetR from the LysR protein family regulates the methionine metabolism in Proteobacteria. It was characterized in E. coli, Salmonella and Vibrio spp. as an activator of the methionine biosynthesis (metE, metH, metF) and other (glyA) genes, and a repressor of the metR gene [1943695]. Physiological and biochemical studies indicated that homocysteine, an itermediate in the biosynthesis of methionine, binds to MetR and enhances the activity of some MetR-activated promoters [1943695]. The comparative genomic approach was used to reconstruct orthologous MetR regulons in Gamma- and Beta-proteobacteria, and in the Rhodobacterales.
