AraC family of transcription factors is a one of the largest families of regulators that control a variety of cellular processes including the carbon metabolism, stress responses and virulence [9409145]. Most of characterized regulators in this family function as transcriptional activators, and some of them may act as repressors [12270809]. Regulators from this family contain a conserved C-terminal HTH DNA binding domain (PF00165) and a variable N-terminal domain that is responsible for protein dimerization and ligand recognition [21215638]. AraC-family regulators are characterized by a diverse range of molecular effectors including sugars, drugs, iron siderophores, etc [21215638].

Some AraC-family regulators, such as MarA and SoxS in E. coli, contain a single DNA-binding domain and are active as monomers, thus activating transcription in the absence of any effector.
