NikR is a nickel-responsive repressor that is widely distributed both in Bacteria and Archaea. NikR was experimentally characterized in Escherichia coli where it negatively controls expression of the nickel uptake transporter NikABCDE. NikR protein binds to its DNA operator in the presence of nickel ions. We used a comparative genomics approach to reconstruct transcriptional regulons controlled by NikR orthologs in different lineages of Proteobacteria [16352848].
