Transcription factor VanR from the GntR protein family regulates the vanillate utilization genes in Proteobacteria. It was first identified in Acinetobacter as a repressor of vanillate demethylase encoded by vanAB. The VanR regulon and its DNA-binding motif were discovered by application of the comparative genomic approach.
