Transcription factor NagR from the LacI protein family regulates the chitin and N-acetylglucosamine utilization genes in various Gammaproteobacteria. The NagR regulons and its DNA-binding motif was discovered by application of the comparative genomic approach [16857666], and was then experimentally validated in Shewanella oneidensis and [21810205] Xanthomonas campestris [20081036]. NagR is a non-orthologous replacement for other regulators of chitin utilization, NagC (ROK family) and NagQ (GntR family), that control the chitin utilization genes in other taxonomic groups of Proteobacteria [16857666].
