Transcription factor NagC from the ROK protein family regulates the chitin and N-acetylglucosamine utilization genes in Gammaproteobacteria. It was originally characterized in E. coli as a repressor of the nag catabolic genes, and later it was shown to act as an activator of the biosynthetic glmSU genes. Physiological and biochemical studies indicated that N-acetylglucosamine-6P, is an inducer which interacts with NagC, provoking its dissociation from DNA. The comparative genomic approach was used to reconstruct orthologous NagC regulons in the Enterobacteriales, and other lineages of Gammaproteobacteria [16857666].
