Transcription factor GguR from the GntR protein family regulates genes involved in uptake and utilization of hexuronates (glucuronate and galacturonate) and hexarates (glucarate and galactarate) in various Proteobacteria. The GguR regulons and its DNA-binding motifs were discovered by application of the comparative genomic approach [16857666]. GguR is a non-orthologous replacement for other regulators of hexuronate utilization (UxuR or ExuR) and hexarate utilization (SdaR) in Enterobacteria. GguR was found to control a novel variant of the hexuronate catabolic pathway that utilizes a dehydrogenase and lactonase that convert hexuronates to hexarates. more
