Transcription factor AraR negatively regulates the arabinose utilization in Gram-positive bacteria. The DNA-binding domain of AraR belongs to the GntR protein family, whereas its effector recognition domain is shared with regulators from the LacI family. The AraR regulon and its DNA-binding motif were experimentally investigated in Bacillus subtilis, where it controls utilization of arabinose monosaccharide and arabinan, an arabinose-containing polysaccharides. AraR represses its target genes in the absence of arabinose. Application of the comparative genomic approach allowed to reconstruct regulons of AraR orthologs in several lineages from the Firmicutes phylum [11750820, 22194461].
