Transcription factor SiaR from the RpiR protein family regulates the sialic acid utilization genes in Gammaproteobacteria. The SiaR regulon and its DNA-binding motif were discovered by application of the comparative genomic approach and was then experimentally validated in Haemophilus influenzae [20843349]. SiaR is a non-orthologous replacement for the GntR-family NanR regulator of silaic acid utilization in E.coli. Physiological and biochemical studies indicated that glucosamine-6-phosphate, is an inducer which interacts with SiaR, provoking its dissociation from DNA.
