Transcription factor GulR from the LysR protein family regulates genes involved in uptake and utilization of hexuronates (glucoronate and galacturonate) and hexarates (glucarate and galactarate) in various Proteobacteria. The GulR regulons and its DNA-binding motifs were discovered by application of the comparative genomic approach [16857666]. GulR is a non-orthologous replacement for other regulators of hexuronate utilization (UxuR or ExuR) and hexarate utilization (SdaR) in Enterobacteria. GulR was found to control a novel variant of the hexuronate catabolic pathway that utilizes a dehydrogenase and lactonase that convert hexuronates to hexarates.
