NikR transcription factors are involved in the control of nickel homeostasis including nickel uptake, storage, and usage genes [21666253]. NikR repressor was originally experimentally characterized in E. coli, where it negatively controls expression of the nickel uptake transporter. NikR protein binds to its DNA operator in the presence of nickel ions [15287729]. In Helicobacter pylori, nickel response is controlled by a NikR ortholog that co-regulates a larger set of genes involved in nickel homeostasis (Ni-dependent enzymes, Ni transporter), at that, depending on the target gene NikR acts as an activator or a repressor [20863122, 21666253]. more
