Transcription factor HcpR from the CRP protein family regulates genes of nitrite stress response. The primary targets of HcpR are the hybrid-cluster protein Hcp, which has a protective role in nitrite stress conditions, and the associated ferredoxin-like proteins. HcpR is present in diverse anaerobic bacteria, including Clostridia, Thermotogales, and delta-proteobacteria [PMID 16261196]. HcpR was initially discovered with comparative genomic approach and then was experimentally studied in Porphyromonas gingivalis and Desulfovibrio species [PMID 22778102, 21265778, 26273559]
