Transcription factor NifA from the Fis family is a master regulator of nitrogen fixation in nitrogen-fixing Proteobacteria. The NifA protein activates the nitrogenase-coding genes in association with the RNA-polymerase sigma factor RpoN [7968919, 12003951]. NifA protein recognizes the palingromic DNA motif with the consensus TGT-N10-ACA [10536136]. In some Rhizobiales NifA also controls genes for denitrification, and respiration [16788198,19840105, 17569992]. We used comparative genomics approach to reconstruct transcriptional regulons controlled by NifA regulators in Alphaproteobacteria.
