LexA family of transcription factors includes highly conserved master regulators of the SOS (DNA damage) stress response in Bacteria. Most SOS genes encode proteins involved in DNA protection, repair and replication [18825275]. Under non-stress conditions, the LexA repressor binds a palindromic DNA operator in promoter regions of target genes, thus preventing their expression. Under DNA damage conditions, the LexA protein undergoes autocleavage reaction, leading to derepression of the SOS regulon genes [19747971]. LexA regulators contain an N-terminal HTH DNA binding domain (PF01726) and a C-terminal peptidase-like domain (PF00717), which is responsible for dimer formation and autoproteolysis [20703307].
