Collection of regulogs for SAM-Chlorobi (RF01724) RNA regulatory element
The SAM-Chlorobi RNA motif was identified by bioinformatics as a conserved RNA-like structure located upstream of the metK-ahcY genes in the Chlorobi phylum . This putative operon encodes S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) synthase and S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH) hydrolase. SAM is a common co-substrate involved in methyl group transfers, while SAH is a product of the SAM-dependent methylation reaction. The intracellular balance of the two species has to be closely monitored to maintain cellular homeostasis and avoid toxicity . The SAM-Chlorobi RNA motif possibly functions as a metabolite-binding riboswitch, although preliminary analysis of RNA constructs using in-line probing assays did not revealed binding of SAM or SAH.
